Mangalsutras — A Thousand-Fold Price Gap, Explained

The cheapest mangalsutra on this page costs twenty-six cents. The dearest costs three hundred and forty dollars. Both are sold as mangalsutras, though the collection spans neck, wrist and finger pieces rather than neck chains alone. Working out which end of that range you belong at is the only real decision here, and almost nobody explains it, so here is the honest version.

Two tiers, two different objects.

Paksha makes the heirloom tier: 85 pieces in 925 sterling silver, $34.99 to $339.99, median $74.99. Hallmarked silver, CZ and semi-precious stone work, made in Chennai. The black beads are strung on actual silver. This is a piece that survives daily wear for years and can be re-strung when the thread eventually goes — which it will, and which is normal.

Embey Vally makes the volume tier: 77 pieces in plated alloy, $0.26 to $0.68, median $0.41. Made in Surat. The black beads carry the meaning and they hold up; the chain and the plating are the parts that will not. Think one to two seasons of frequent wear, not a decade.

Where the Paksha range actually sits. Twelve pieces come in under $50, but every one of them is a bracelet, a ring or a pair of earrings — the neck-worn mangalsutra starts at $54.99. Forty-one sit between $50 and $99, and that band is the sweet spot: 34 of them are neck pieces, full silver, proper stone work, nothing ornamental enough to be occasion-only. Eighteen run $100 to $199. Fourteen sit above $200, and those are the temple-work and layered-pendant pieces that photograph like bridal jewellery because that is effectively what they are.

Where the Embey Vally range sits is a flatter story, because it has to be. The spread is so compressed that price tells you nothing — twenty-eight pieces share a single $0.41 price point and nineteen more sit at $0.36. Sort that tier visually, not numerically. At these prices, buying two designs and deciding later is a reasonable strategy rather than an indulgent one.

So which tier. If this is the mangalsutra — the one worn daily, the one that matters — buy sterling, and the $50 to $99 Paksha band is where the value concentrates. If you want a second chain for a specific outfit, a travel piece you would not grieve losing, or you are buying several to try shapes before committing, the alloy tier exists for exactly that and the economics are hard to argue with.

Where people go wrong is treating these as competing answers to one question. They are answers to two different questions, and plenty of people reasonably own both.

On modern versus traditional, which is the other thing most people are resolving: shorter chains with minimal pendant work read contemporary and sit well under a collar for office wear. Longer double-strand pieces with heavier pendants read traditional and are the ones that photograph properly at a festival. Both shapes exist in both tiers.

For Karwa Chauth specifically — the one festival of the year built around this piece — we have pulled a festival edit from the alloy tier with the occasion in mind.
